Crooked Tree Ranch by R.J. Scott5/31/2023 ![]() Jay is a marketing executive who is retrenched and circumstances lead him to taking a job on the ranch owned by Nate and his brothers. ![]() Most of the story takes place on the ranch but we spend a bit of time in New York when we first meet Jay. This book had a nice contrast with city-boy Jay and country-boy Nate. It was unlikely there would be any Brokeback action anywhere near Crooked Tree." How wrong Jay was! This series is a winner because of it's cowboy theme - who can resist a gorgeous cowboy! "Nate was a cowboy, all yee-haw and camp fires and macho crap. Without fail I get emotionally invested in the characters and love to see them appear in subsequent books. I love her characters and I love the stories and I adore the way she builds a series. She's one of those authors who's on my must-read list and I have yet to be disappointed. Those of you who read my reviews regularly will know that I have a definite soft-spot for R.J. ![]() ![]() Crooked Tree Ranch is the first book in the new Montana series by R.J. ![]()

![]() ![]() When he walks to the sea later he sees a line of seagulls sitting on the water waiting for the rising of the tide. Nobody he works with seems very impressed with his story of the birds flocking into his house. He tells his wife as much too, calming her fears by telling her the birds are restless because of the changes in the weather. However, in the morning, the birds leave the house, which makes Ned think that they were seeking warmth, out of the cold. Throughout the night the avian invasion continues there are birds swooping in and out of his children's bedrooms which scares them. When he goes to see what is making the noise he sees a bird, and when he opens the window the bird pecks aggressively at his hand, making it bleed. ![]() ![]() ![]() Ned believes it is the extra cold weather that is making them behave this way. One day he notices that many of the birds that fly over the peninsula where he lives with his family are acting very strangely. Nat Hocken has just returned from action in World War Two he was wounded and is living on his military pension which he subsidizes by working part-time for a farm owner nearby. It turns out the owner of the car, Douglas, is a dangerous man with a chip on his shoulder, and when he comes into the restaurant to complain about the smashed headlight, he sees something in Sam that puts him directly in Douglas’ crosshairs. That all changes one night when he accidentally smashes the headlight of a sports car while playing potato hockey behind the restaurant. He just coasts along, hanging out with his friends/coworkers Ramon, Brooke and Frank, never quite satisfied with his lot in life, but not exactly unhappy, either. In Hold Me Closer, Necromancer, Sam LaCroix is a college drop-out with a dead-end job at a burger joint. ![]() Jude thomas hardy5/31/2023 ![]() ![]() The majority of "persons", so it seems, go as so far as to play on that doubt and say we are bad, even though we are more ethical than that "other directed" string pulling majority of cookie cutter "well adjusted". ![]() It seems to about, in part, one of those of us, who take one step forward and get knocked 10 steps backwards And what is reflexive in so many, perhaps the majority of homo sapiens, is to exploit those with that chronic, over active conscience, that morbid constant doubt which leaves some of us so exhausted and vulnerable. Jude is one who suffers from what we may be label today as morbid scrupulosity or ocd or whatever.maybe i am totally off. Along with "naturalism" or realism, and a grimness(well at least in Jude) sympathy also stand out in Hardy's novels Far from the Madding Crowd is the one that comes closest to a happy ending. Far from the Madding Crowd, Tess of the Tess of the d'Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure are my favorites by Hardy. ![]() The Legacy of Heorot by Larry Niven5/31/2023 ![]() ![]() OL10587704W Page-progression lr Page_number_confidence 93.77 Pages 408 Ppi 400 Related-external-id urn:isbn:0575040157 Use features like bookmarks, note taking and highlighting while reading The Legacy of Heorot (Heorot Series Book 1).
